THE POWER OF COMPASSION

His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Dharma talk at Dieu Ngu Temple in Westminster California , June 2016
translated summary by Thich nu Tinh Quang

"Religious beliefs have differences. Most of world religions believe in a creator who is Supreme Lord of all things in universe, and created human, living beings... Basic of Buddhist philosophy is to believe in the karma of beings and also supreme power of the man himself, so that our God is mainly infinite compassion, between people and people, between people and the animals so on...
Buddhism includes the Sakyamuni‘s teachings nearly 26 centuries ago. Later divided into the three major sects: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana schools, depending on cultures and regions they have the different practices and rituals.
The Theravada Buddhism Practices in Pali systematical texts, Mahayana and Vajrayana (Diamond) Buddhism base on classic Sanskrit texts, derived from Indian Buddhist philosophy and culture of each country. However, the basic fundamental teachings of all three traditions as the four noble truths, the eightfold…

And the essence of the doctrine that is enlightenment and compassion. Enlightened teachings basically dissolve our ignorance. The nature of ignorance is craving, to having something, clinging to ego…Buddhist philosophy teaches us to practice sunyata (emptiness), The sunyata is experimental philosophy very deeply in order to eradicate delusions of craving for the self. Because more attach and crave, so we are selfish, just thinking about their own interests, forgetting that all of us and living beings in sunyata have equal value; we’re lack of our compassion in dealing with others. We Buddhists are interested to practice compassion can be expressed our enlightenment with noble values for our family and society.
The power of compassion is the key to perfecting the great value of ourselves and others. People are born to be loved; we are sentient livings, we are born and die all the same way. But the difference is that while in the mother's womb, If the mother has a calm heart and peace of mind, the mind of full love, these will help to develop a very good child. But if the mother during pregnancy filled with worry, fret, and sufferings those will adversely affect her unborn child. We are born with drinking the mother milk and the mother's boundless love. Thus, human nature is love. Love is the key to keep the mind‘s freshness , peace, and happiness. Love makes good health. Compassion besides helping for health benefits it always brings to peace of mind. In contrast, anyone who only cares about money and power to satisfy five desires will lead a lot of anxiety and insecurity and easier to making one’s diseases and crisis . Life begins with our love, so love plays a very important role in livings. Therefore, if someone love his (her) friends, relatives and people around, that person will be happy. So how to get rid of suffering in living? Starting with immeasurable love, we must develop compassion in our mind in order to provide happiness for our family, society and the world.

Even those who have no religion, this is also very effective and necessary. We are the part of 7 billion people on this earth, love will get us together, become a big harmonious family, and lead us to peace.
Don’t forget the development of compassion and peace inside, educational efforts should be the mind of compassion, because of the violence comes from the uneducated mind. I appeal Buddhists have to consider to peace by mindfulness and reflecting compassion right now, so that we can provide true peace for the world.
Secondly, being a Buddhist monk may I just develop harmony between religious faiths? I saw there are many people used the name of their religious belief but much killing each together today. How to get along and respect each other's religious beliefs? And how do we learn from other the teachings without distinctions?
The different religions have different philosophies, perspectives, and concepts but getting together to convey a message, that is love and compassion. At here, most of the Vietnam Buddhists you are, just live in harmony with other religious beliefs; anywhere, live in harmony with others. (Tibetan territory in the highest position of the world; in geographical impact, The Tibetan also more harmony, relaxed, and comfortable than other nations. In addition, absorbing by Buddhist philosophies which are also very high and deeply, so why the Tibetan has more good understand and tolerance than people.)
We must develop an honest heart, a good heart to behave well for everyone. So, our lives will be happy, society will be happy, the world will be happy and peace. We should not be too concerned about making much money and be famous in lack of compassion. In addition, we need to educate and develop the compassion and love for the youth to maintain peace still growing up.
Compassion is the big message of Buddhist philosophy. The compassion must be assisted by wisdom. To develop immeasurable compassion, we must rise to the bodhi inside. The bodhi mind is guiding for living beings, and wisdom towards light of our enlightenment. To get rid of the hree poison of greed, hatred and delusion, root of sufferings and wars. When the bodhi (enlightened) mind has evolved, great abilities in building full peace for the individual, family and society have more opportunities."
