A Special Breathing Exercise!

His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse

 Visualize the person you hate the most is in front of you.  When you breathe out, all your happiness, good deeds, and wealth will leave yourself like the wind and mist and merge into the enemy.  Therefore, he was free from pain, full of joy, as happy as he was in the pure land of Western bliss.

 When you breathe in, all his pain, evil deeds and obstacles sink into our body like dust in the wind.  Imagine that his pain truly fell on us, to feel the weight as if he was carrying a burden.  With practice, visualization will become easier and easier.

 If you have been engaged in such meditation for a long time, month after month, year after year, you will become accustomed to it and your feelings will increase.

 In the past, a disciple of Kanchen Tashi Ossa lived in seclusion in the mountains.  When a servant of his family passed away, he prayed for the servant.  One night, he dreamed that his servant was reborn in a hot hell in the way of hell.  After waking up, the hermit went directly to Kanchen Tashi Osa, explained the dream to him, and asked him to pray for his late servant.

 Kanchen Tashi Ossa replied: "I will pray for him, but you should also practice the visualizations exchanged by him. If you can continue to practice, he will be free from hell."

 The hermit returned to the cave and intensively practiced the visualization he exchanged.  Seven days later, his body was covered with blisters.  He thought it was a sign, so he went to Kanchen Tashi Osa again.

 "You want me to exchange my practice," he told the master, "Now my body seems to be burned by fire, and my body is covered with blisters."

 "This is just a sign," Kanchen Tashi Ossa said, "That servant has been freed from hell. It also means that you really have the ability to exchange your own happiness for the suffering of others."

 If we hope to get real benefits from this practice, we should continue to practice until such signs arise.

 When Azong Drukpa's disciples practiced the exchange method for others, called "Tonglin" in Tibetan, they especially visualized people who have committed many serious evil deeds.  In the process of practice, the comprehension and awareness they have gained in past meditation are often deceived and sensory obstacles increase.

 If such signs appear, don't think that we will suffer in the future.  Geshekara Gongqian prayed for the rest of his life: "May I take the place of the beings who accumulate bad karma and be reincarnated in hell." He repeated this prayer in the twilight.  But just before he passed away, he said: "My wish is not fulfilled!

 Because it looks like I want to go to the Western Paradise; no matter where I look, I see a flowery garden and flower rain.  Although I have been praying that all sentient beings may go to the Western Paradise and be reborn in hell on their own behalf, but it seems that I cannot go there.  "This is the result of self-exchange.

 ☀️ 頂果欽哲法王|一種特別的呼吸練習!

 觀想你最憎恨的人在你前方。 當你呼氣時,你一切的快樂、善行和財富,如同風吹霧氣般離開自己,融入敵人之中。 因此,他從痛苦中解脫,充滿喜悅,如同投身西方極樂淨土一般快樂。

 當你吸氣時,他所有的痛苦、惡行和障礙,如同風中塵沙般沈入我們的體內。 想像他的痛苦真實地落在我們身上,要感受那重量,如同自己身負重擔。 隨著練習,觀想會愈來愈容易。

 長期從事如此的禪觀,月復一月,年復一年,你就會習以為常,你的覺受也會有所增長。

 在過去的時代,堪千·札西·歐薩的一位弟子在山中隱居。 當他家中一位僕人過世時,他為僕人祈請。 一天晚上,他夢到僕人投生地獄道中的一個熱地獄。 醒來之後,這位隱士直接去找堪千·札西·歐薩,向他說明這個夢境,請求他為已故的僕人祈請。

 堪千·札西·歐薩回答:「我會為他祈請的,但你應當同時修持自他交換的觀想。如果你能夠持續地修持,他將會從地獄道中解脫出來。」

 隱士回到山洞,精進修持自他交換的觀想。 七天後,他全身長滿水泡。 他認為這是一種徵兆,於是他又去找堪千·札西·歐薩。

 「你要我修持自他交換,」他告訴上師,「現在我的身體彷彿被火焚燒一般,全身長滿水泡。」

 「這只是一個徵兆,」堪千·札西·歐薩說,「那個僕人已從地獄道中解脫。這也表示,你真的有能力以自己的快樂來交換他人的痛苦。」

 如果我們希望從這個修行法門中獲得真正的利益,我們應當持續修持,直到這類的徵兆生起。

 阿宗·竹巴的弟子在修持自他交換法時——藏文稱之為「通林」,特別以犯下許多深重惡行的人為觀想對象。 在修持過程中,他們過去禪修所獲得的領悟和覺受,常常會被蒙蔽,感覺障礙增加。

 如果出現這種徵兆,不要認為我們在未來會承受痛苦。 格西卡拉·貢千一輩子都祈請:「願我代替那些積聚惡業的眾生,投生地獄道。」他在晨昏重複這個祈願。 但就在他圓寂之前,他說:「我的願望沒有實現!

 因為看樣子,我要前往西方極樂世界;無論我朝哪裡看,眼中所見盡是花團錦簇的花園和花雨。 雖然我一直祈請,願所有眾生前往西方極樂世界,自己代替他們投生地獄,但看樣子,我是去不成了。 」這就是自他交換的成果。
